Queensland residents: please sign my petition to the Queensland Premier, to revoke his gag order that prevents debate and the introduction of any Bill that seeks to amend the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018.
Dear Premier,
Petition To Revoke the Termination of Pregnancy Act Gag Motion
As a Queensland resident and signatory to the above mentioned petition, I hereby request that you introduce a new motion into the Queensland parliament to revoke the motion—passed on the 10th of December 2024—that orders:
1. No bill or amendment seeking to amend the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018 can be introduced.
2. No motion or amendment expressing views on the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018 can be moved.
3. The Speaker must rule out of order any bill, motion, or amendment that violates these restrictions.
The motion, introduced on 10th December 2024, sets an alarming and dangerous precedent for the Queensland Parliament. If a Government can gag debate on one issue today, what’s to stop any Government with a majority in the Legislative Assembly from extending this practice to other issues tomorrow? Today, it’s abortion laws; tomorrow, it could be free speech, environmental concerns, or economic policies. This is a slippery slope that erodes the very foundation of a representative democracy.
